Waking up with lower back pain? Not sleeping through the night?
There’s probably something wrong with your sleeping posture or mattress and it may be the time to replace your mattress. Now replacing your mattress can be exhausting. Navigating stores and websites, checking out different brands’ reputations, and determining how much to spend for the new mattress.
To help you make an informed decision, we’ve gathered essential information on three of the most common mattress materials sold in Malaysia. Read on and don’t forget to try before you buy!
1. Memory Form
Memory foam mattresses have been around for decades but have only gained popularity in Malaysia relatively recently. The memory foam mattress’ claim to fame is that it conforms and contours to your body, creating a cradle-like effect. Historically, memory foam has had a bad reputation as “sleeping hot”. However, many newer more advanced memory foams have been designed with superior cooling properties, creating a much cooler mattress than traditional memory foams.
It is generally considered a more premium choice and manufacturers often “guarantee” restful sleep. However, scientific evidence is not available to support the latter (too many variables/subjectivity). Rather, memory foam is more likely to provide better sleep for those who appreciate softer mattresses.
Cost: High-quality memory foam mattresses can be pricey. For instance, a high-density queen size memory foam mattress ranges upward (on average) from RM2, 000. But the cost also depends on the type of foam, additional treatments, and core materials.
Durability: High core density memory foam mattresses can last approximately eight to ten years depending on usage.
Best suited for: Sleepers who want great hug, body shaping, contour, pressure relief, and support. A good option for sleepers who want a more pronounced hug than many hybrid or latex mattresses offer.
2. Innerspring
Spring mattresses remain a common choice in Malaysia due to its relatively cost-friendly reputation. Innerspring mattresses have one or more layers of spring coils (generally steel) that provide the support and comfort. As technology advances, the number, types, and layers of coils change. A larger number of coils typically means better comfort and support. In addition, spring mattresses can be topped with latex, memory foam, cotton or others to suit different comfort preferences and needs.
Cost: Depending on its comfort layer material (top layer), brand, and coil construct, among others; the price range for innerspring mattresses can have a broad range. For instance, medium-to-high quality queen-sized innerspring mattresses range from RM850 to RM5, 000 (on average).
Durability: These mattresses rank as one of the lowest in terms of durability when compared to latex or memory foam. The average lifespan for medium-quality innerspring mattresses can last just five to six years (depending on usage) before significant sagging is felt. To get better bang for your buck, make sure your spring mattresses come with good warranty plans.
Best suited for: Sleepers who want a more traditional coil / spring feel, great bounce, cooling, and strong edge support. People who sleep alone or are not easily awakened with movement. Also, innerspring mattresses are generally cooler (the coils allow air to circulate) and might be a good fit for people who complain of heat when sleeping.
3. Latex
Made from natural rubber sap, latex mattresses are one of the most environmentally-friendly options available. In addition, its open-cell structure allows for air circulation that keeps the mattress cool and comfortable. It also happens to be allergen-free and furthermore, organic latex grown without pesticides is safer and considered a good choice for younger children.
Cost: Natural latex mattresses are generally rather expensive. The price range on average, for a queen-sized natural latex mattress, is from RM2, 800 all the way to RM8, 500, or more, depending on its thickness and support core. Hybrid mattresses, with spring and latex are a slightly more pocket-friendly option.
Durability: High-quality natural latex mattresses are incredibly resilient and can last up to 15 years, depending on use.
Best suited for: This mattress material has excellent motion absorption, so just like memory foam; it’s great for couples. It’s also a good option for those who suffer from allergies and certain respiratory illnesses (e.g. asthma), as natural latex is resistant to dust mites and mold.
